Outreach Programs

A few of the Outreach programs that Grace Church participates in: Coupons for Military families, Tab tops and Donations for Heartly house. We take seriously Jesus’ mandate to “Feed my sheep.” Our primary and year-round community outreach is providing food to the Frederick Food Bank, which serves a wide range of people in our community. With special attention to this offering in the winter months, we generally deliver about 200 pounds of food per month. Other on-going outreach ministries include making blankets for the troops and prayer shawls for community members in emotional, spiritual, or physical pain; supporting the members of a Maryland Guard Unit stationed in Afghanistan; and collecting pop-tops to benefit families of sick children at the Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore.

The Christmas season finds us in engaged in various outreach projects. In the past several years, we have adopted families, children, and/or senior citizens through the various social service agencies in Frederick, providing food, gifts, and money to families in need. More recently, much of our Christmas outreach focus has been on supporting our troops by sending care packages, home baked cookies, cards & letters, and filled stockings to men and women in the armed forces; and MORE cookies and gifts for the babies and children that our troops care for through a voluntary humanitarian effort.

As part of the Frederick Regional Council, we support the Trinity School in Frederick, an Episcopal/Lutheran partnership providing schooling for children through the 8th grade. We also participate in our regional medical mission to Panama. And when natural disaster such as tsunamis and hurricanes occur leaving parts of our world in chaos and destruction, you will find the members of Grace Church generously contributing of their time and resources to assist victims.

Our Daughters of the King , Women of Grace Chapter has also recently taken on more Outreach commitments. For more information, please contact the DOK president, Trish Holahan.

Current Outreach Programs at Grace

Food Bank:

The Frederick Food Bank continues to be in great need of donated food. The poor economy has increased their needs as more are in need of their assistance. Please take a moment when you are at the grocery store to pick up an extra can or two of food and bring it to church with you on Sunday. Just one can or box a week from each family is a great contribution and is strongly appreciated!

Warm Coats:

Bring in your slightly used warm coats, sweaters, gloves, scarves to be distributed to the needy this winter by Burlington Coat Factory. The collection box in is the Narthex. Donate until January 19, 2014.

Can Tabs Keep a cup next to your recycling bin, just for the can tabs, an easy way to remember that you want to save those can tabs!

We collect can tabs to send to the Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore. The Ronald McDonald House then sells the can tabs to a recycling center for cold, hard cash. They use this money to offset costs of running the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald Houses are places children and their families can stay when the children are receiving medical treatment away from home.

Please consider the next time you open a can drink (soda or otherwise) taking the can tab and dropping it into a plastic bag. When the bag is full, please bring them to church with you and drop in the can tab jar. The Ronald McDonald House receives 40 cents per pound of aluminum they turn in. They only collect the can tabs because it is more hygienic to store the tabs and storage of the tabs is easier than the storage of cans. So far this year, we have donated eight pounds of can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. Let's see if we can triple this amount by the end of 2011. GOOD LUCK!

Companions for Heroes Do you know that everyday 23 veterans take their own lives and every 8 seconds a shelter animal is euthanized? You can make a difference. Help heal the lives of veterans, active military personnel, first responders, and sheltered animals.

I want to introduce you to a wonderful program called Companions4Heroes. C4H provides dogs obtained from shelters and/or rescues, who might otherwise be euthanized, free of charge to active duty military personnel, military veterans, and first responders suffering from psychological challenges they suffered during service to our country. We all know how an animal can make such a difference in lives by offering unconditional love. C4H increases public awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other challenges confronting our country’s heroes; and rally’s support for animal welfare and the adoption of shelter and/or rescue animals. C4H is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with headquarters in Arlington, VA.

To find out more: I hope in the future, this will become an annual Grace Outreach. Watch bulletin and newsletter for updates and more info. Only recently have we become aware of all those heroes who have invisible signs of the horrors of war and terrorism called PTSD. We CANNOT forget them!

Heartly House - A shelter for abused women and their children located in Frederick

We are asking that donations to Heartly House be in the form of Gift Cards. I'd like to add that everything that has been donated is very much appreciated and also plead for small denomination gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Sheetz, etc. These really help us stretch things and give the clients a little sense of empowerment by being able to buy their own things or put gas in their car to go to a job interview.

If you have an idea for a new Outreach Program, or if you are interested in heading up our Outreach Programs, please let someone on the Vestry know!
